Finale of Roots of New Orleans Music: Celebrating Jazz and Culture

Overview

This finale celebrates the creativity and joy of Roots of New Orleans Music with a dance party and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the organizations and individuals who supported this program. It’s a chance for everyone to embrace the vibrant spirit of New Orleans jazz and reflect on the journey through music and culture.

Goals

  1. Celebrate the program’s conclusion with music and movement.

  2. Express gratitude to the supporters and participants.

  3. Reinforce the cultural legacy of New Orleans music.

Materials Needed

  • Playlist of New Orleans-inspired music, including upbeat jazz, blues, and second line songs.

  • Space for dancing and group interaction.

  • Optional: Props like scarves, ribbons, or second line umbrellas to enhance the celebratory vibe.

Session Steps

Welcome and Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Begin by welcoming students, teachers, and participants to the grand finale.

  • Highlight the journey of exploring New Orleans music and culture through the program.

  • Set the tone with an energetic New Orleans jazz song to get everyone moving.

Dance Party (10-15 minutes)

  • Invite everyone to dance freely to the music, incorporating movements learned throughout the program.

  • Organize interactive activities, such as:

    • Second Line Parade: Lead a celebratory parade with students, teachers, and props.

    • Freeze Dance: Play music and pause it intermittently, encouraging participants to freeze in place.

    • Showcase Time: Let students take turns leading the group with their favorite moves or rhythms.

 Closing Celebration (5 minutes)

  • Play the final song, encouraging everyone to dance with full energy and joy.

  • Invite participants to clap, cheer, and celebrate the music and culture of New Orleans one last time.
