Lesson 1

Class One: Introductions & Violin

Snack Time

Icebreaker (5-7 mins)

  • Ask everyone their name

  • Ask everyone their favorite animal

  • Ask everyone their favorite food

  • Or make up one of your own!

 

Listen to Second Line Stomp, Instruct the students to follow the directions in the song (3 mins)

 

Introduction to the string family (5-10 mins)

  • Show the students pictures of the violin, viola, cello, bass, harp and guitar

  • Ask the students what colors the instruments are

  • Count the strings of the first instrument introduced, violin (4)

 

Introduction to the violin: (5-7 mins)

  • Ask the color of the instrument

  • Ask the students to help count the strings

  • Show video of a violin player and hear them talk about the violin

 

Story Time! Read ‘Jazz Baby’ (15 minutes)

 

Freeze tag! Play a violin solo let them dance and then pause the music and they stand completely still (5-10 mins)

 

Arts & Crafts! (15-20 mins) 

  • Help the students to start their Little Stompers String Sheets (color and cut out the violín)

Lesson 2

Class Two: Viola

 

Snack Time 

 

Play Theme Song (3 minutes)

 

Review the violin (3-5 minutes)

  • Have the students show their color cutouts from the first class

  • Ask the students to remind you how many strings are on the violin

 

Introduction to the viola (5 minutes)

  • Ask the color of the instrument

  • Ask the students to help count the strings

Game - Slow/Fast (7-10)

  • Have the students pretend to play the viola.

  • Have the students imitate slow and fast versions of a viola player

 

Story Time! Read one of the provided Little Stomper books (15 minutes)

 

Copycat Rhythm Game:

  • Teacher divides students up into two groups & has everyone to clap steady quarter notes

  • The first group will jump eight times to the beat using this count: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, while the other group claps their hands on the beat eight times

  • Demonstrate with yourself and the classroom teacher first and have the kids watch and then try this activity with the students

 

Arts & Crafts! (15-20 mins) 

  • Help the students to start their Little Stompers String Sheets (color and cut out the viola and their to their poster)
